Praenom Editorial Desk

The Praenom Editorial Desk is the team responsible for every name profile, list page, and tool published on praenom.com. We combine onomastic research, official U.S. Social Security Administration data, and machine-assisted enrichment with human review to produce a names resource that is accurate, current, and useful for expecting parents and naming professionals.

Editorial methodology

Every name page begins with verified popularity data from the U.S. Social Security Administration's annual birth records (1880–present). Etymology and meaning are sourced from the public-domain Behind the Name corpus (CC BY-SA 4.0) and cross-referenced against published onomastic dictionaries. Where multiple plausible etymologies exist, we present the most widely attested first and note alternatives. Meanings are categorised into a fixed 30-bucket taxonomy reviewed by the editorial team — taxonomy decisions are documented internally and revised on a quarterly cadence.

Use of AI-assisted enrichment

Editorial blurbs for the long tail of less-documented names are drafted with the assistance of OpenAI GPT-4o, then audited by the editorial team in batches of 500. We disclose this because trust matters: AI is used as a research and drafting tool, never as an unreviewed source of fact. Any reader who spots an inaccuracy can email editorial@praenom.com and we publish a correction within 7 days. AI-assisted pages are flagged in our internal log and audited at higher frequency.

Data sources

Primary popularity data — U.S. Social Security Administration annual birth name dataset (ssa.gov/oact/babynames). Etymology corpus — Behind the Name (behindthename.com) under CC BY-SA 4.0. Phonetic data — Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary (cmusphinx.github.io/CMU-Sphinx/). Sound profiles, sibling-match scores, and middle-name suggestions are computed by Praenom's own algorithms; methodology is documented at /editorial-standards.

Corrections and reader feedback

We treat naming as a serious decision. If you find an error in a meaning, origin, popularity rank, or any other published claim, please contact editorial@praenom.com with the page URL and the source supporting the correction. Corrections are reviewed within 3 business days. Substantive corrections are noted on the affected page with the date of revision.

Editorial independence

Praenom is a reader-supported publication. The site is monetised through display advertising (Mediavine network) and contextually relevant affiliate links to baby and parenting products. Editorial decisions — which names to feature, which meanings to publish, how to rank popularity — are made independently of any commercial relationship. Affiliate placements are labelled with an FTC-compliant disclosure on every page that contains them.
